Where the conversion stands: construction begins October 2026

The building at 401 W. Ontario Street, Chicago

A conversion like this one runs on a long clock. Here is where the work stands — what’s finished, what’s next, and when the first residents arrive.

Design & Planning — complete, 2025

Architectural plans developed in careful keeping with the building’s 1905 heritage. The starting point for everything that follows: the original posts, beams and brick stay, and the residences are drawn around them.

Permits & Approvals — complete, early 2026

Historic preservation review passed and building permits secured. For a building of this age, this is the quiet milestone that matters most — the plans are no longer proposals.

Construction Begins — October 2026

Adaptive-reuse construction commences on the historic building. This is the next milestone on the board, and the one we’ll be writing about most from here on: the journal will follow the work as it moves through the building.

First Deliveries — October 2027

Residents move into their new loft homes in the heart of River North — one year from breaking ground to first move-ins.

Two milestones down, two to go. The next entry in this series will come when construction begins.
